Steve Smith is an experienced trial lawyer, third-generation native of Boise, Idaho, and a member of the firm’s litigation group. He is experienced in defending lawyers charged with disciplinary offenses and with legal ethics. Smith is the former chairman of the Washington State Bar Disciplinary Board and is frequently appointed by the WSBA to defend lawyers in disciplinary and disability proceedings. He is a frequent speaker on various subjects involving lawyer ethics and disciplinary proceedings.
Mr. Smith has substantial trial experience, including cases involving natural resources disasters, wildland fire litigation, and other resource issues. His trial experience in the courts of Idaho, Washington, Alaska, Hawaii, the territories of American Samoa and Guam, and the Federated States of Micronesia include complex casualty, construction, aviation, maritime, professional and medical malpractice, products liability, and general commercial cases.
Mr. Smith has also argued numerous state and federal appeals, and has been retained as an independent third party investigator for allegations of employment discrimination and sexual harassment.
In addition to commercial interests, Mr. Smith has represented ship owners, airline pilots, airlines, lawyers, doctors, and other professionals in a wide variety of cases. He also represents athletes before the Idaho High School Activities Association.
Prior to joining Hawley Troxell, Mr. Smith was a trial specialist with the Oceania’s largest law firm, Carlsmith Ball LLP in Honolulu. He previously practiced with and was chairman of the Transportation Litigation Group of a large Seattle law firm.
